Oscars 2024: “Oppenheimer” crowned Best Picture
Tuesday, March 12, 2024“Oppenheimer,” the blockbuster biopic about the race to build the first atomic bomb, claimed seven Academy Awards including the prestigious best picture trophy, Reuters reports.
Irish actor Cillian Murphy won best actor for playing theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, leader of the U.S. effort in the 1940s to create a weapon that ended World War Two. “Oppenheimer” director Christopher Nolan took home the directing Oscar, and Robert Downey Jr. received the “Best Supporting Actor” award.
Emma Stone won best actress for her starring role in “Poor Things,” where she played a woman revived from the dead. It was the second Academy Award for Stone, who landed the best actress honor for 2016 musical “La La Land.”
Da’Vine Joy Randolph won best actress in a supporting role for “The Holdovers.”
Box office powerhouse “Barbie” won one award for best original song for the ballad “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O'Connell.
“20 Days in Mariupol” won the “Best Documentary Feature Film” award.
Britain’s “The Zone of Interest,” about a German officer's family living next door to the Auschwitz extermination camp during World War Two, won the Oscar for best international feature film. Director Jonathan Glazer addressed the Israel-Gaza conflict in his acceptance speech.
Outside, hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters angered by the Israel-Gaza conflict shouted and slowed traffic in the streets surrounding the Dolby Theatre.
