Northern Wind Brings Significant Improvement in Yerevan’s Air Quality
Monday, December 15, 2025
The influx of northern wind has significantly improved air quality in Yerevan, a city official said on Monday.
“Since yesterday, a northern wind has swept into the region, resulting in a significant improvement in air quality. The improvement is so substantial that it is comparable to summer levels. Yesterday morning, the PM2.5 level was around 30, while today it stands at 65.8,” said Sirarpi Haykazyan, the caretaker director of the Environmental Department at Yerevan City Hall, while presenting data at an executive meeting.
At the same time, Haykazyan noted that city officials are continuously monitoring air quality, emphasizing that the current situation is caused by both man-made and natural factors.
“In the upcoming city council session, we plan to propose additional amendments within the framework of two decisions aimed at reducing emissions from human-made sources. According to these amendments, additional restrictions will be applied to construction sites, and mandatory rehabilitation standards will also become applicable to mines,” she stated.
Last week’s monitoring data showed a relative improvement in air quality in Yerevan.
In November, the air quality was in the moderate to unhealthy-for-sensitive-groups range.
Data from 184 air monitoring stations installed at construction sites in Yerevan showed that the average air quality index (AQI) in November 2025 was 142 for PM2.5 and 64 for PM10. These values fall within the moderate to unhealthy-for-sensitive-groups range. However, during the last ten days of November, the AQI for PM2.5 peaked at 180, placing it in the unhealthy range.
