Hundreds of Firefighters, Military Helicopter Tackle Wildfires in Armenia’s Northeast

Hundreds of firefighter-rescuers are combating four wildfires in Armenia’s northeastern Tavush province, near the popular resort town of Dilijan. The town itself appeared to be out of danger.
One of the fires – in an area called Kazanchi – has been contained as of 10:30 on November 26, authorities reported.
The Rescue Service said that firefighting operations to contain and extinguish the wildfires in other areas – near the Navur community, the forest along Dilijan’s winding roads, and adjacent to the Mountainous Armenia Hotel – are still ongoing. The Rescue Service denied media reports claiming that the fire had spread into the hotel’s territory.
“The fire mainly spread in the grassland areas. No large numbers of trees were burned in the area; only heat damage was recorded. The spread of the fire toward houses and the resort was prevented,” the Rescue Service said in a statement.
A total of 669 firefighter-rescuers, 215 eco-patrol officers, and local volunteers are involved in the operations. A military helicopter has conducted 22 flights, dropping water and carrying out reconnaissance.
The cause of the wildfires is not yet clear.
No injuries have been reported.
